How it works

Two Halves Of One System

A home battery connects to your solar PV system (or, in some cases, directly to the grid) and stores electricity as direct current (DC) energy, ready to be drawn on later. During the day, any electricity your solar panels generate but don't immediately use is directed into the battery instead of being exported to the grid. In the evening, when your panels have stopped generating but your household demand is often at its highest, the battery discharges that stored energy to power your home — reducing how much you need to buy back from your supplier.

Many modern battery systems also support smart, tariff-aware charging, meaning they can charge from the grid during cheap off-peak periods as well as from solar, and some can provide backup power during a grid outage, keeping key circuits running when the power goes down.
